| Destination Ooty |
Overview |
|
|
| |
 |
|
|
| An ever-popular hill station,
Ootacamund has been given the title of
`Queen of Hill Stations’. During the
Raj, when only the highest officials
could reside here, it was given the
nickname of `Snooty Ooty’. Resting
amidst the Pine, Red Gum, Blue Gum,
Silver Oak and Cypress trees, these blue
mountains were first explored by the
English in 1812. John Sullivan was the
first to proclaim their delights to an
appreciative public in 1819. |
| |
| Since its delights were first
experienced by the Raj officials, Ooty
has been the summer retreat of those who
could escape the summer months of
Madras, Mysore and Bangalore. His
Highness Chamarajendra Wadiyar X was the
first Indian prince to acquire property
here and his example was followed by
others, such as the Maharaja of Baroda,
the Nizam of Hyderabad and his Chief
Minister, Sir Salar Jung. Since then,
Fernhills has been the summer palace of
the Wadiyar family. |
| |
| Ooty hosts an array of events and
places to visit. The famous flower show
and boat races take place in May, as
does the Derby. Other places of interest
include the Government Botanical Garden,
St. Stephen’s Church and Elk Hill.
Because of the number of affluent
tourists who come here, a number of
interesting antique shops have been
established and do a brisk business. |

| Extreme
exclusivity |

|
Other high-profile resorts and hotels, which
offer exclusivity often, fail when it comes to
essential privacy. The media and news of your
movement and presence can arrive before you do.
Fernhills Palace ensures complete exclusivity. |
