The Wadiyar Dynasty | Contribution

The Wadiyar dynasty took over the mantle and military traditions of the ancient Vijayanagar kingdom. The rulers initiated development in Mysore on a broad and comprehensive front. The field covered was enormous, encompassing art, literature, music, philosophy, education, medicine to industrialization, administration, political and social reform. Rulers like Raja Wadiyar I (1552-r.1578-1617) who dedicated his reign to maintaining and preserving cultural and religious traditions in the face of threats from neighbouring foes. Chikka Deva Raja Wadiyar who introduced the harbinger of modern administration in the 16th century. Krishnaraja Wadiyar III (1794-r.1799-1868) who rebuilt the old Mysore Palace and initiated the development of Mysore into a modern township. Chamrajendra Raja Wadiyar X (1863-r.1868-1894) who introduced political and social reforms, establishing representative government and emancipating the underprivileged and downtrodden. Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV (1884-pattabhishakam 1895-1940) who pioneered the democratic movement, an idea alien to the rest of princely India. He developed the first Hydroelectric projects in India and irrigation for agricultural purposes. Ably assisted by his younger brother, the Yuvraj Kanteerva Narasimharaja Wadiyar, his reform of the State Exchequer, together with his political and agrarian reforms turned Mysore into one of the most prosperous states. Many of the Wadiyar kings were great patrons of the arts, literature and music and were themselves well-versed philosophers, writers & musicians. Music reached its zenith during the reign of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, the father of the reigning Maharaja. His composition of 98 songs have made their way into the repertoire of Carnatic music, the classical music of South India. In 1947 he had the choice of electing for an independent state of Mysore. However, his political wisdom, together with the earnest pleas of Sardar Patel and V.P.Menon, decided him to accede the state to the Union.
